"No Hay Banda......"
Welcome once again to the strange and
beautiful world of David Lynch. You're not in Twin Peaks,
nor are you in Dune, or even the quaint yet twisted world
of Blue Velvet. Nope, when you enter David Lynch's Mulholland
Drive, you have entered into Hollywood, baby. L.A., dude!
But even by saying that I'm full of it, as this is no Hollywood
you or I have ever seen. You find yourself in a Hollywood
that only exists in David Lynch's unique mind, and boy oh
boy, what a ride this movie turns out to be.
You are immediately presented a series
of images that have apparently no common thread: a first-person
view of sobbing; an attempted murder interrupted by a car
accident; a jitterbug contest; I could easily go on with a
few more examples. You really don't get a narrative flow until
about a half hour in, but at that point is where things slowly
but surely make a sort of sense. What sense can be made? A
detective story with a Hollywood dreamer and an amnesiac trying
to piece together what happened the night before. Or is that
everything? Add into the mix a Hollywood director, the Italian
Mafia, a mysterious starlet who "is the girl", and
a blue key that no one knows what it unlocks.
So perhaps the above didn't sell you
on the movie. But c'mon, you know you're curious. And believe
me, if after watching this movie once you don't have any yearning
to see it again immediately, well, good on ya, but I sure
had to see it again. And read about it on the Internet.....
and watch it again..... Your mind should be throughly blown
when you've finished watching this. Not to mention the fact
that both Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harring are freakin'
hot. And if the whole mystery thing doesn't do anything for
you, there's actually some serious lesbian action. No joke.
I wouldn't tease you like that.
Scenes to Remember:
The unbelievable performance in Spanish of Roy Orbison's "Crying"
at the Club Silencio; Betty and Rita comfort each other; The
Cowboy Meeting; The Party on Mulholland
