31 July 2006 I turned the papers in... |
And while it's not a done deal, it certainly feels like a relief. So today was the first day you could turn in your paperwork for the Voluntary Separation Program, which includes that hefty payoff/severance package. If you make it before the quota is reached. Which had everyone panicking, as there were quite a few officers at my MPF this morning. Unfortunately for them, they only had single digit quotas for their career field and year group, while I have 49. Still not a mind-boggling huge number, but still good for me. But after many trips to Peterson's MPF, a few trips to Staples to get the form faxed to the CC and then received back signed, the form is on its way to AFPC. I was so nervous this morning - I couldn't believe I was actually going to do it. And worst of all for me, my Dad and Pat were still around. This isn't exactly perfect timing. I know he's probably disappointed in me, but I just can't keep doing this for other people anymore. I've wanted to enjoy this career path, but I just don't. It had its moments, that is for sure, and I've gone so many places and seen so many more things I ever would have without it, but I just don't want to spend another 12 years doing this when I pretty much hate it. I'm so happy there's people out there still who enjoy the military lifestyle, and I don't want to put any disrespect their way with my feelings. They're just my feelings, and the way I need to live the rest of my life. God, I got sappy on you a bit. I just really want to reiterate that I completely respect those who want to serve a full career to the military; I'm just not satisfied with this lifestyle anymore. But let's get to some other happier stuff: Dad and Pat are here, along with the pups. And it's definitely been a great time having everyone around. On Saturday morning I was trying frantically to finish up the clean up effort as well as do some last minute errands, and of course as I'm scrambling to get back by 11am, which is when they said they'd be here, I drive up my road and sure 'nuff, there they are! But we got everyone settled, the dogs seemed to like the place, and it's been a good time getting caught up. I'm trying to figure out just what they're going to do in the future concerning their living plans, but they're still not sure themselves. It definitely sounds like it is Texas, or somewhere equally warm, if not more so, but I know that they both like Colorado so far, but Pat is definitely against the cold aspect. On Sunday I got them out of the house and we did some of the Colorado Springsy stuff, including a hike around the Garden of the Gods, then a drive through Manitou Springs to see the hippies as well as drive by the Cog Railway and the base of the Barr Trail (Pat didn't want to get cold up at Pike's Peak, so no Pike's Peak visit this time), then a drive up Cheyenne Mountain to the outside of my office. I didn't have my badge nor did I have enough notice to get them in the mountain this time, but the weather was beautiful and the view was clear, so that was cool. Finally made it back home, where we had an awesome barbeque on my kick-ass grill. The weather still was awesome and we ate outside on my furniture. These kinds of occassions were exactly the reason why I got that stuff! It was just nice. We've also made some runs to Barnes & Noble, where I've picked up a few books on Career Changing and Bathroom renovation and redesigns. I think I can do quite a bit to both of those rooms and they'll look amazingly different. Guess we'll see!!!! I haven't downloaded the pics yet, but I'll put them up soon (that's for you, Uncle Richard!). Anyways, today was spent mostly working on the separation paperwork, and also investigating what kind of tree my Dad is going to buy for me for my backyard! We also went to Hobby Lobby, which was amazingly different than what I expected. I got a cool wall clock for my theater room, a 'Bon Appetit' sign for my kitchen, and a painting that has exactly the colors I want for my bedroom - a variation of blues and whites that hopefully I can combine tastefully. Finally, and here's where I could use some out-of-state help - I got a huge binder for those 'State' Quarters - but the kicker is that there's two spots for each state - one for the Philadelphia mint and one for the Denver mint. It seems the west coast gets the Denver quarters (you see a small D on the quarter for Denver minted, and a P for Philly) as I have not ONE Philadelphia quarter. So I beseech you alls, check your quarters - if you have any 'P' quarters, I'd happily buy them and the postage to get them here. Jenny, this is probably mostly for you, as I don't have too many east coast friends!! And it looks like this extracurricular craps dealing job may become lucrative, real fast. I haven't even worked the Broadmoor event when I'm already being offered another job this weekend at a 'Private Party' for Colorado Engineers. That kind of scares me, as they're going to be all math-smart and probably correct me lots and bet odd amounts just to fuck with me. I haven't accepted that event just yet.... But like I said, the more I work, the more Vegas money I'll have!!!! Here's some BB7 updating as Season 6 continues it's domination:

26 July 2006 Catchin' Flags, y'all! |
It seems I drifted off topic in my update yesterday... What I was trying to convey, while watching Scrubs Season 3 on DVD, was that I was Mr. Awesome at the Change of Command ceremony. During the ceremony, just after I had introduced the MSG/CC, a very strong gust of wind blew in. As I was looking at the MSG/CC after introducing her, she looked at me and her eyes were bugging out. I thought maybe I had called her a horrendous whorebeast or something while under the spell of Tourette's sydrome, but then my peripheral vision caught the fact that the American flag was falling over right towards me! My spidey sense took over and my left hand shot out while I stepped to the flag and caught it before it keeled all the way over. Of course, I also have an audience now, waiting to see if I would drop it. Well, I look out to the squadron formation (in panic), and two head over. As they're on their way, the AF flag doesn't wanna let the US flag have all the fun and starts to keel over as well. Well, Mr. Right Hand was ready for this, and caught that flag too. So I've got hands-full of flag!!! To make matters even worse now, the American flag decided to separate from the wooden staff, so the flag was now sliding down the staff completely unattached. Yeah, that was definitely a tense moment. But people came up, brought some tape, taped the US flag back up for a quick fix, and then we had two people hold the flag staffs up for the rest of the ceremony. And my debonair delivery of the rest of the ceremony ensured that the audience was fully enrapt. I got plenty of props for not letting the flags drop - and that's because I rule! Anyways... to today's news: The AF released its plan today to cut down manning and meet future budget constraints - and at the top of the list of ideas to cut manning: Voluntary Separation Pay. Only those officers with more than 6 years and less than 12 can qualify for this. And for a Captain with 6 years in at separation, the AF will give you a severance of ~$93K, and it scales up the higher ranking you go (a Major with 12 years in gets $170K!!!!). I can't say no to this. I'm not happy anymore in the military (I really haven't been for awhile - read the website), and while there are great benefits to being in it, I'm just done. So I will be making some calls next week (you can apply for separation starting 31 July) and figuring out if I can make a planned separation in a year. That'll give me about 8 years of service in and a healthy severance package to keep me afloat while getting another job. But if I can actually plan a separation for a year from now, I'll obviously be working on getting a job long before I'm headed out the door. So that's the decision, folks: Come Summer 2007, I will be very done with the US Air Force. It's been a great ride, and I've learned a lot and been lots of places, but stick a fork in me!

25 July 2006 Some Guests on the Horizon |
Dad and Pat are on their way to the Springs! I got word from them yesterday that they'll be here on Saturday. I'm thankful they gave me some warning, so I can try to get my house in decent 'entertaining' shape. I'm really not sure how long they'll be here, but I took Monday and Tuesday off so I could have at least some extra time to spend with them instead of spending the day at work while they're here. You know, there was other stuff I wanted to write (like how I'm currently re-addicted to playing Final Fantasy X again - LOVE that game), but beyond the big news above, and my BB7 update below, I ain't got much. This weekend was okay, but not nearly as exciting as I thought it was going to be. Oh yeah, I forgot that I haven't updated since the retirement ceremony! On Friday's Change of Command ceremony, I was the narrator and I had a starring role and I was ALSO the half-time entertainment as I displayed my ability to catch flags that And now it's time for my two-episode BB7 recap:
20 July 2006 Lt Col Johnson is retired! |
Her retirement ceremony was tonight. It's kind of weird to think that she is done! Kinda jealous, I must admit. And she had it on a damn Thursday afternoon!!! I ended up being the DD, which is fine, but why couldn't the shindig have been on a Friday?? But I digress. It was an actual really nice ceremony, with KD playing violing during the flag folding ceremony, which I was a part of! There was also lots of family and friends, a really long, but good speech by the MSG commander, and a lot of good heartfelt words and emotions. And then of course there was dancing, and laughing, and drinking. I had a few glasses of champagne and a beer, but stopped so that I could remain the sober one. Suck suck suck!!!! It's my turn, I guess. But next time we go out, I was promised (by a car full of drunk friends, so I probably should take that with a grain of salt) that we'd go in a taxi. Which I ALWAYS suggest, but these people can be so damn cheap sometimes!!!! Alright, that's just my bitterness seeping through a bit. Anyways, it was a good ceremony that went off with pretty much no hitch. Sweet! Tomorrow is the Change of Command, and then we all open the door to the new commander, of whom I have no real clue as to how she'll be. She definitely seems nice, which is a plus, and the word about town is that she is fair and lets you get your job done - but if it starts being late, then she'll be on you like no one's business. I consider that a fair repercussion, so I don't think I'll have much problem with that. But I'll have to wait and see what happens! In other news, I have decided to pick up an extra job hooking it up on the weekends... okay, I jest! But I have decided to take up the casino rental place on the offer to be a craps dealer - and the first job will be at the damn Broadmoor Hotel on 8 Aug. I have to call her tomorrow to settle it, but I'm now going to need make sure I practice and practice how to deal craps, just to make sure I'm the best! Since I bailed on my last BB7 update, I have to consolidate the last two shows together in one update:
I'm tired now, and I want to catch up on some sleep - in tomorrow's ceremony, I have another key role: I'm the Narrator!!!! Look at all these star roles I'm taking! And as I said earlier, I've been promised some cab fun tomorrow, so I may have some interesting stories on Saturday. Yeehaw!!! |

17 July 2006 More food for thought |
I love having so many talented friends with taste and style. At least that's what I'm assuming! I've put some effort into my interior design software plans of my upstairs area that I'm interested in redoing - and here are the pictures of the plans, with the various angles of view. It's pretty damn close to what I have currently - and you can see there's lots of room for improvement. I'm no longer going to move the walls - it's just more effort than it's probably worth. Click these images below for a slighly larger view! The Existing Floorplan (approximate)Looking North EastSouth WestIt looks like this week is another one where there'll be more half-days! The commander's retirement and change-of-command ceremonies (on Thursday and Friday, respectively) are during the afternoon, and that means work is done by 1300 or so!!! SWEET! Anyways, I'm totally looking forward to making my bedroom and bathrooms all kick-ass and stuff! Send me ideas, pronto! And BTW, I had to update my captions for the pictures below - I got an email from Terese wondering why I was calling myself a craps table... and I thought the poor girl had gone insane. Only now did I finally realize what the hell she was talking about!

16 July 2006 Some more thought on my remodeling |
You guys had some good advice for me! I think I'm off of my kick to knock down and remove walls and linen closets - if I had one comment that was universal, it was about that damn linen closet! So sleep soundly tonight, kids, the linen closet's future is secure. But after watching some HGTV and DIYNetwork shows throughout this weekend, I'm thinking that instead of wall movement, I can do sink and tub and shower replacements, as well as tile replacement. I'll have to put up some proposals once I've created a few - I like putting a red and white theme in the guest bathroom, with big floor tiles and replacing the tub with one of those awesome new whirlpool models. Make that a place you'll really want to come back to! And so that's that - thanks for the advice, everyone! So in other completely un-related stories, here's what's been going on this week. Last week there were a few soirees for Lt Col Johnson's upcoming retirement and change of command - first at a nice Italian restaurant called Biaggi's - very nice wine room was where we had our get together, and it was reasonably priced but very cool. One of the pictures below is of me and KD heading to Biaggi's - we're flashing our gang sign to the world - CS, yo! Anyways, the dinner was a good one. Then on Friday, another half-day by the way (well, basically), we had a going-away for all the squadron for her - SCB (my flight) got her a nice glass decanter that had the CS patch engraved on it as well as a thank you message from the flight. It was hella classy and by far the best gift given...okay, that's just my thoughts on that. I couldn't be wrong. As Ferdie says, I'm a triple threat (although I think that's short-changing me, just a bit...) and I gots taste, yo! ;-) This weekend was pretty fun too. On Saturday (after waking up at 11am - sleeping-in rules) I ended up meeting up with Susan and Jeff for the Pikes Peak or Bust rodeo. I don't really think i've been to a rodeo before - as far as I remember. It was awesome - these guys are completely crazy to be riding these horses who want nothing more than to get these guys off of them. It was pretty damn cool. To watch - definitely not to try. Then we went and saw X-Men 3 again (well, it was 'again' for me - they hadn't yet seen it). The movie holds up again for another viewing, especially since I hadn't stayed for the very very last scene, after the credits - seems that there is hope to get Xavier back - I guess it's not really hope - he is back. Just not as himself, and he now has working legs. I'm sorta shocked that they left such a plot point for after the credits, but if this is the last movie, maybe they just wanted to have it open in case there is X-Men 4. Today, hung out with Susan and Jeff again, this time first getting lunch at Old Chicago's (love that place) and then driving around to different stores, one of them being a Western wear store. As you can see, I actually found a hat big enough for my head, and it actually was one i liked. So for the first time in my life, I own a cowboy hat. And I will probably wear it next weekend as we're going to head to the local Western club - get there early for the western dance lessons, and then put the dance floor on fire that night!!! Or not. Guess I'll report back to y'all later.
And for those of you keepign up with this awesome season of BB7:
And finally, I have another DVD review - this one of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I guess not finally - what the fuck is up with World War III seemingly on the verge of happening? North and South Korea - Israel and Lebanon - Us and Iraq...? Not really a time I want to be in the military... In the immortal words of Rodney King, 'Why can't we all just get along?' So in the meantime, to make myself forget all about the troubles in the world, I am immersed in working on this site right now and having Britney's Best-of Videos playing in the background. What the hell happened to her, speaking of things that have gone to hell - poor girl is all grow'd up and white trash-like. Whatever, she's happy, I hope. |

13 July 2006 So tired today! |
No real idea why, but I was just exhausted. But you didn't come here to hear me whine, did you? Anyways, didn't do all that much the last few days. Jenny emailed me and it sounds like she's doing good - although she introduced me to some new vernacular -> zOMG. No real clue as to how this came about, but here's the urban dictionary definition. Kinda funny. Today was just really draining and boring at work though. Tomorrow we have our going-away for the CS commander - then next week is the change-of-command and her retirement ceremony. Gotta be nice. I don't have much else to talk about - I'm just updating because I'm a BB7 fanatic and I've got to keep up on it. Anyways, here's the latest:

11 July 2006 Plans for my house |
So I tossed around my idea of bathroom remodeling to my coworkers today. And after drawing it out and talking about it, I really think I can transform my upstairs bathrooms into a more appropriate arrangement, with respect to the way the master bathroom is compared to the 'guest' bathroom. All I gotta say is that the master bathroom is not a master bathroom. And if I hope to have a decent resale on this house, I think I need to remodel. I used my Interior Design program to layout the current arrangement and a proposed idea - I think it could work. Take a look: Before: After:
If you notice above, I basically get rid of the linen closet and the area for the washer and dryer in the guest bath area. I think that the washer/dryer room is a waste of valuable space, and I think putting those appliances in the garage would work just fine. I also think that I could put the linen closet somewhere else, although I haven't really figured that out definitively yet. But I think people want comfortable bathroom areas first and foremost. And as it is now, the master bath is just kinda small. And sad. Who knows how expensive this idea is though? I think I'll eventually try to get an estimate from local contractors - just to see if I need to give up the dream. Can't hurt to ask though, right? Anyways, it's been raining a whole lot here in Colorado Springs. We've desparately needed the rainfall, and my grass is growing great now. I frankly enjoy the way the rain comes in - as in the morning, it's sunny and dry, letting the area dry up a bit and drain the water away. But come about 4:30 pm, every day, the clouds come rolling over the Rockies or sometimes from the East, and then we get extremely heavy rain. Generally get lots of lightning too - it's very exciting weather. In other news from work, the Mountain is having one of those 'dirty details' fundraisers - basically you can put money on the person of your choice, and if by the end, they are in the top 10 ranking, they do that ranking detail. Guess who is #1 right now? You'd be correct. I'm actually tied for first at the moment. There's still about two weeks left on the bidding though, so I honestly think as people realize what's going on, I'll get surpassed, as I think people would LOVE to see our group commander do any of the 10 details. #1 is washing, inside and out, one of the CMAFS busses or fire engines. And apparently the plan is to load up the inside of the bus with crap (not literally). Other details include shoe-shining for 2 hours in the lobby of the building, being Exec for a few hours to the group commander, and washing all the floors of the outside buildings. I'm not worried. :-) Well, today was Tuesday, so Big Brother was on. And as promised, here's
my BB7 update!

9 July 2006 Is Ambition such a bad thing? |
I think not. So where the hell is this question coming from, right? Well, I went and saw 'The Devil Wears Prada' today at the movie theater - a very entertaining chick flick. I freely admit that it's a chick flick, but that initial preview for the movie, with it being an entire scene as opposed to being a clip montage, was very effective for me. And Meryl Streep in the movie is amazingly awesome - and the whole NY scene is pretty interesting. At least if you're one of the beautiful people. But I digress, a bit. In the movie, the lead character, Andy (Anne Hathaway), takes a job as the assistant for the editor of the biggest fashion magazine. Andy doesn't want to be a fashion journalist, she wants to be a 'real' journalist at the New Yorker. But she knows if she can last for a year at Runway (the magazine), she'll be able to write her own ticket to any magazine she wants. So she gets the job, discovers that her boss is the devil incarnate, but perseveres because she recognizes that she will excel at whatever task is in front of her. And I recognized that trait in her as one that I have as well. I will do my best in whatever job I am confronted with, even if it sucks. But Andy starts doing lots of overtime to the detriment of her personal life in order to excel at the job. Her job takes the Priority #1 slot. But she starts making amazing connections and contacts, and if she so desired, she could indeed write her own ticket. But she gets all this crap from her friends and family for being successful... because even though she is successful, she is also miserable. But here's where I'm a bit torn. Don't you sometimes have to go through the crap in order to make it to the better parts of a career? I don't know, it just seemed in the movie they made it a bad thing to have ambition. Guess what? Not all jobs are your dream job and not all of them are places where you're going to be happy. We're not all so lucky to have that. I've noticed that in the military, ambition really doesn't help, especially in the officer ranks and in the comm officer field. Sure, you might be able to screw someone else over if you can get that award over them. But there's really no reward or ability to move up if you do the best job. Now, there is anti-ambition rules in effect in the military though: if you seriously fuck up or do a seriously unsat job, you will find yourself out of favor. I did mention the comm officer field in my statement, which is important. I've definitely heard about how those in other fields, like aviation, intel, and fields with lots of exposure to higher-ranking folks, that if they do a good job, usually they get taken care of. But in comm, since we're a dying breed, there's no one to take care of you anymore. We're the flab that is getting cut away from the body of the AF. Hence why in 2007, I'm outta here. Then I can put my ambition and drive in full effect for me. I don't have too much of a personal life, so there's not much to leave behind or neglect! Anyways, that was my rant for the day. I have to recommend The Devil Wears Prada as a great movie - it's a great rental, and if you're bored one afternoon, pick it up at a matinee. Pirates of the Caribbean - you need to see in a theater. So I have made some updates around the site. First, I put some updated listings on the photo site, as well as making it match the new scheme of the website design. I'm not sure it's exactly how I want it now, but for now, at least it's green. Also, I hope to get back to writing about my DVDs, and I've restarted with Kill Bill, Vol. 2, which is review #9. Only 484 to go...<sigh> And can you believe Big Brother 7 is only on TWO nights a week??????!!!!!!!! WTF? It used to be on Tuesday, Thursday AND Saturday. Now Saturdays are gone. Bummer.

7 July 2006 I do love me some half-days! |
Yes, I do. Today at work we had the squadron picnic, which effectively rendered us to a half-day of 'work'. And then in the morning, I went to Peterson AFB so I could cheer on my troops who were taking their PT test...so basically I had a few hours to kill before the picnic. And I managed to get some stuff done. Yay for me!!! Then we had the picnic, which was fun. Just a nice time to meet some of my flight members' family members and I also got a chance to meet some of the new people coming to the flight. But anyways, after all that, I got home around 3...sweet! I did some damn weed-pulling (for the love of God, I hate this part of having my own lawn. And I don't do it enough as I'm supposed to and of course it gets out of control. Why isn't there something that makes weedkilling easier?) But the main fun event of the day was going to see Pirates of the Caribbean!!!! It was damn awesome. But it was definitely a middle part to a trilogy, as in Empire Strikes Back, it leaves you in the midst of a quest and while not like ESB, a surprise character comes back at the very last frame of film. By all means, if you enjoyed the first PotC, then go see this one. And if you don't know that one of the most addictive shows has started up again, then let me be the first to tell you: BIG BROTHER 7 has started!!!!!!! I've lost my Shooting Gallery forum for some reason, so I'll be putting my BB7 thoughts inside special text boxes like below. If you want to ignore them, please do! If you want to read them and get addicted yourself, feel free! With that, here's my thoughts on Thursday's premiere episode.

6 July 2006 And we're Baaaackk! |
I've returned to my website! So to do a quick summary of things since last we spoke: I saw Superman Returns (had chills seeing all the amazing homages to my prized original movie, such as the soundtrack, the flying credits, his repeat of lines like "Statistically speaking, flying is still the safest form of travel!", etc; it was a great movie, in other words!); it was Byron's birthday on 29 Jun - HAPPY BIRTHDAY BYRON!!!!!; I did end up renting my craps table, and it was a blast (see the pics below), which is what we played after going to Denver and having an amazing dinner at this place called Radizio's Brazilian Grill (the waitstaff walks around with skewers of amazingly cooked meat that you have them cut off for you if you so desire - delicious!!!!!!!); the rest of that week was spent anxiously awaiting going to....Las Vegas!!!!!! So that we did! It was a very fun trip - me and Jeff headed out there on Friday night on a flight while the rest were coming out on Saturday. But we started out the day fine, getting drunk and gambling and enjoying the Vegas sights. Throughout the rest of the trip, the rest of the group came out and we did many numerous things, including gamble, heading to the Stratosphere right before sunset and staying till it got dark as well as riding Insanity during the daytime (much scarier than when I rode it before at night), seeing a showing of O at the Bellagio (freakin' amazing!!!!!), getting ridiculously drunk at the Napoleon's Piano Bar in Paris, shopping at lots of places, partaking in an Oxygen bar, and eating lots of food at numerous buffets. Good times had by all! Unfortunately, now it's back to work, but at least it was a relatively painless week. So far. Anyways, I'm watching Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl right now while I was getting all my pictures ready, basically in order to prepare to see PotC: Dead Man's Chest tomorrow! Amazingly, all the showings for tomorrow are selling out really damn fast. In fact, as I was trying to buy us tickets for tomorrow, the show I was trying to get sold out. Now we're all seeing a 10:30 showing. Oh well, I think I saw the first one at a very late showing too. Well, I'm sure this wasn't exactly the thrilling update you were expecting, but I'm a tad distracted by the DVD currently on. And can you believe that Big Brother is back on for the summer???? I can't wait to watch and see what happens this year, especially with it being an All-Star version. All I gotta say is my Janelle better be on the show! So with no more further ado, here's some pics to keep you entertained!
So how do you think the final kitchen painting looks? I'm pretty happy, and if you compare it to the drawing from last month, and I think my drawing was pretty damn close! Anyways, my craps table experience may prove to be somewhat lucrative for me. When I made the reservation, the proprietor of the business and I started chatting, and she eventually asked if I had an interest in being hired as a craps dealer...and while I haven't made an answer yet, I definitely think I'm interested. How fun would that be????
If anybody can explain what the hell 'O' was about, I'd love to hear it. It was a beautiful show, but WTF???? |
