All bow down to the glory of DVD!
I am finally going to admit to the world that I have a problem ... an addiction really. It is an addiction to those shiny discs that you can put in the player and they will play a movie with amazing sound (if you have a good receiver and speakers mind you) and amazing picture (I'm working on getting a better TV - more on that later).
So in order to help me with my addiction, I've decided to post my list of DVDs - It is kind of shocking to realize how many I have and how much that actually equates to in money. It's a good thing I'm single and without children and making nice 1st Lt money! Without any further ado, the list!
DVD Spotlight of "The Collection"
I saw a pretty cool Top 100 list (of which I have 51) online the other day, and it inspired me to write up my own thoughts on my DVDs, as I knew that I am extraordinarily humorous, talented and witty, so hell, why not talk up one of my DVDs? ;-)

The Work of Director Michel Gondry: I have just discovered an amazing new DVD series that will appeal to anyone who has a taste for music and the videos that go with them. Check this: When you suffer through MTV nowadays, you pretty much end up with the crap de la crap. I can only take some videos recently, because sometimes you get a glimmer of originality that matches a song perfectly. I've found that most rap and hip hop videos are disposable trash. I do like the music, but the videos are uninspired rehashes of each other, with bootylicious girls shaking their thang at the camera. Blah. Yet all is not lost. There are artists and directors who collaborate and create a vision that dares you to come along and watch, listen, and enjoy. Some of my most cherished music videos (off the top of my head)include "Bedtime Story" by Madonna, "Who Is It" by Michael Jackson, and well, you see, not too many make an impression. But these DVDs have arrived to prove me wrong. Indeed, there are lots of videos that have been created that showcase a sense of artistry and creativity which bring new life to a song. They just don't get played on MTV... perhaps MTV2, which my cable is getting in December! Yay!! Recently, the first three volumes of a new series have been released. They are part of the "Work of Director" series, and the first three are Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, and Michel Gondry(which I'm talking about now). I bought Spike Jonze as well - I passed on Chris Cunningham, as there were not that many videos or bands I recognized on the list. But at the cheap price, I may reconsider soon. Let's talk about Michel Gondry though. I had/have no idea who this guy is. Yet when I saw the track listing on this DVD, I was blown away, and I could barely spend my B-day Amazon GC from Robbie fast enough. Included on the listing is Kylie Minogue's "Come Into My World" video, shown above (yummm... FOUR Kylies!) and "Around the World" by Daft Punk, also shown to the left. Gondry has a definite style, and every video on the set is completely original yet has a signature very particular to Gondry. I seemed to notice he likes to take an element from the song, whether it be a sound, a beat, or possibly an idea brought about by the melody, and focus and refocus on that idea. It's a great take and provides an all-around multimedia experience for the viewer. To see the Around the World video for the first time leaves you scratching your head. But then you realize that it's a very cyclical dance beat and hey, why not have mummies and skeletons and robots dancing in a circle? Other great videos include the Foo Fighter's "Everlong" and the Lego video by the White Stripes. I haven't even watched Side 2 yet, but there are even more, including lots of Bjork, whom I love. So I can't stress how exciting these new video collections are, and if you love the art of music videos, I recommend these HIGHLY. I shared the love via Amazon.com a week ago - if it's still available, Buy them. I eagerly await the next set, and expect to see some more Madonna videos as well as Michael Jackson videos soon. I'm guessing Mark Romanek will be up soon. |
