I hadn't seen my Dad or Pat for years, so it was
great to finally have the opportunity to fly down there and see
them again. It wasn't bad to see the island either. I flew from
Las Vegas after a week of living in the casinos with mom and Harv
and an Italian Thanksgiving and all the rest (like getting my car
and apartment). Anyways, I took the redeye from Vegas on the day
after Thanksgiving (and amazingly, the airport was almost deserted.
Everyone was coming to Vegas that weekend, and not leaving) to Newark
(where I was able to see the skyline of New York sans the WTC),
and then finally get on a flight to San Juan. I wasn't staying in
Puerto Rico though, as the folks live off shore of Vieques, the
island most known for its status as Naval Bombing Range. At San
Juan, I then got on a small airline to Vieques, and I had the airplane
all to myself. The view was spectacular, and it was even better
than Flight Simulator. Dad was waiting for me at the 'gate', and
rendered the proper salute, of course.
The trip was a blast. I lived on the boat with them, enjoyed the
water and snorkeled a little, had fun in town, and we even got to
go back to Roosevelt Roads for a few days (we were delayed there
a while because the weather got a tad rough on the day we planned
to leave, so we stayed another day). There we stayed with Pat's
friend Nancy Lee in her fantastic house on the hill. Nancy was a
great lady and her house has an amazing view. Below are some pictures
from throughout the trip.
Oh yeah, on my way to San Antonio, I ended up getting delayed at
the airport, first having to wait for 9 hours in the airport as
the flight was repeatedly delayed. That evening, we got the news
the flight was cancelled after first waiting, then boarding a plane,
only having to then come back to the terminal because the plane
was broke. I ended up getting put up in the Condado Plaza Hotel
in downtown San Juan. Not too shabby at all! Fortunately, the next
day I was on my way to San Antonio, without incident or delay. Whew! |
