Some things happened this weekend:
I ate a Ramen Burger. We went out to dinner last night to a new place (for us) in Atwater Village called The Morrison. It was wonderful and lots of fun, with it being kind of a more contemporary version of a pub. Great food and I finally tried out a Ramen Burger. Well, color me surprised, but that is a fucking great burger. You get a regular burger but instead of a bun, you get cooked ramen formed into a bun shape. It’s wonderful. Larry’s cousins back east were part of the original craze that swept the NY area last year as they supplied the meat for the official burger. We ended up meeting the owner of The Morrison and he told us that the originator had come out here and taught them how to make it. Thumbs up! Will definitely come back here.
We saw The Imitation Game. Actually saw this back on Friday, as I ended up taking that day off due to the rain and our Disneyland plans falling through for this upcoming Monday and Tuesday due to more anticipated rain. ANYWAY, so we went out to the Arclight Hollywood theater again, which is rapidly becoming one of our favorite movie theaters especially since it’s not attached to a shopping center. We’re not going anywhere near a mall until after Christmas, that’s for sure.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Saw this at Arclight Hollywood on December 12, 2014
Larry & I are doing fairly well with regards to Oscar-bait movies this year, although when I saw what got nominated for Golden Globes, it seems that we’ve got a ways to go. The Imitation Game tells the story of Alan Turing and his efforts for the Allies to crack the Nazi’s Enigma code-machine during WWII. It also bookends the movie with Turing’s childhood at his boarding school as well as the end of his life when he was prosecuted for homosexuality. It is a very entertaining movie though and fascinating to see what went into Turing’s machine, but I think you’re left wanting a little more. You don’t really get more than a taste of his personal life except when it runs up against his work, nor do we get much more about how big of an impact Alan Turing has had on the world. Obviously we get his impact on WWII, but his genius and ground-breaking work in the realm of computer science and artificial intelligence are just mentions. Obviously that could be another movie.
Like I mentioned, it’s a good movie and likely going to be Oscar-nominated. It was devastating to see how Turing ended up though, getting prosecuted for a ridiculous “crime” and the tragic results. I can’t understand how he wouldn’t have been protected from those kinds of actions just by virtue of helping to end WWII earlier and saving countless thousands of lives. All for being gay. Imagine the possibilities of what else he may have discovered.
Watched Guardians of the Galaxy again, this time at home. It is such a fantastic movie, and the 3D at home was ridiculously impressive. I was talking with Larry during the movie that I think Star Wars: The Force Awakens has some pretty decent shoes to fill here. While GotG is a Marvel movie, it’s really one of the best space movies that’s recently come out. Larry thinks Star Wars just has to worry about other Star Wars movies – he’s right, of course, but I think it can shoot for more than that too.
We set up our Christmas tree today. Our fake tree is still trucking along and it looks great in our apartment. Also finally put up a string of our color lights – it’s a veritable Chrismukkahpalooza up in here.
And that’s that. No Disneyland this week because of the forecasted rain, which of course means it won’t rain. It’s FINE though, as we’ll still go sometime next month. And it won’t be nearly as crowded. Also, going back to the doctor tomorrow as he wants to talk to me about my physical’s results. I’m keeping positive and hoping it’s a lecture on having to eat healthier. Please let it just be that. I can deal with trying to eat healthier, even if I won’t like it.
