Larry texts me this morning that Prince dies and the day gets derailed. I had heard that last week he’d had to have an emergency landing in his private jet due to medical reasons…but man, a week later and he’s dead? 2016 has been a royal fucker of a year with regards to icons dying. First Bowie, and now Prince? Man, growing up in the 80s, you had your Holy Trinity of Pop Music with Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna….and now 2 of the 3 are gone. Keep on being you Madonna and carry that torch long and proud. I can’t even begin to comprehend losing her anytime soon.
Seriously though, Prince wasn’t my favorite and of those three, Madonna and MJ I’d put higher, but that does not diminish at all the impact Prince had on me and my friends in the 80s and 90s. “Kiss”, “When Doves Cry”, “Purple Rain”, the scandalous “Erotic City” (I still have distinct childhood memories of sneaking listens of that while in elementary school and giggling at the pure raunchiness of that song, which really isn’t all THAT raunchy when compared to some songs nowadays), “1999”, and the completely iconic “Let’s Go Crazy” – any party plays that song and it’s pretty much a guarantee absolutely everyone will know the opening sermon’s lyrics and be singing along. Prince’s death definitely reminded me I had an appalling lack of his songs on my reception playlist. So guess what Wedding Guests? You will be dancing and possibly crying to some Prince and David Bowie songs in 9 days!!!!
9 fucking days…holy shit, how did it become less than double-digits till our wedding????? How is it that a 57-year-old pop star dies??? What a day.
